In May 2021 I joined Twitter. I had no idea what I was doing.
I started a blog in April 2021 and thought Twitter might be a good place to attract people to the blog.
So I started tweeting.
I primarily posted blog articles with the link to the article right in the tweet.
I had a few friends on Twitter and got a like every once in a while.
In August 2021 I had 11 followers.
I decided to reach out to a few people I had been following.
That simple request started something magical.
I am a writer, but I didn’t know how to write on Twitter.
I learned so much from my ghostwriter and used him for 6 months.
He tweaked my thoughts and added structure to them.
I found my voice on Twitter.
Today I have over 200,000 followers and make thousands of dollars each month with my X account.
The very first thing you must do (right after you create an account) is to pick a niche.
A niche is a specific topic you will write about every day.
There are so many niches out there, the sky is the limit.
Finding a good niche is important as once you choose this topic, it will be difficult to change over time.
Think about a topic that interests you or an area where you’ve had major comebacks or major growth in.
Niche Ideas:
Before you choose your niche, look at similar accounts you want to become.
Stay consistent with your niche. (it’s easy to get distracted and want to serve multiple audiences, but it confuses your audience)
Your profile is made up of your bio, your photo, and your header.
Your goal is to optimize each one of these components and make sure they align and flow with each other.
You don’t want a photo that shows seriousness when your header is humorous, especially if your content is funny.
Make sure all pieces align. This gives your followers and potential followers a clear picture of your brand in seconds.
Is it clear what value you are adding to others?
Your profile should have a clear value proposition.
Do you have a clear photo?
Is your header clean and consistent?
Decide whether you will be an anonymous account or you want to be front and center.
Benefits of anonymity:
- No one knows it’s you (not your friends, extended family or professional network, or colleagues or bosses
- You’re free to provide any content you want without anyone attacking you personally
Benefits of Your Face on the Account:
- Sponsorships – brands like faces with their products. You’re more likely to get a brand deal
- Coaching – if you want to coach others, in many cases, people like to see a face (however, one of my favorite coaches/mentors has an anonymous account)
- For me, it seems easier to network but this might just be a personal opinion.
Whether you go anonymous or not, you may want to put a keyword in your name.
For example, I haven’t done this, but instead of Cori Arnold, I could have my name – Cori Arnold | Debt to Millionaire to come up higher in the “millionaire” searches.
Millionaire is an example of a power word. These are words that drive attention. You need power words in your bio.

In order to create a substantial following, you must provide value in your content.
Your content is the biggest factor in whether people will be attracted enough to follow you and engage with you.
This is the key to how much you can earn on X.
It really all comes down to how you write and what you write about.
People come to social media sites for three primary reasons:
- Entertainment
- Education
- Inspiration
You’ve got to incorporate at least one of these into every post you write.
How to decide what to write about:
You’ve got to find out what issues or problems people are focusing on. For example, the other day a post went viral about the unaffordability of housing right now. People are agitated about it, and if given the opportunity, they will engage highly in issues they care about.
In the book, Contagious, Jonah Berger highlights 6 principles that make products go viral. These can be applied to content on X.
1. Social Currency
“How do it make people look to talk about a product or idea?”
No one wants to talk about their money, but I talk about mine all the time. Even though talking about money may not be a comfortable thing for most people, they are still curious how others view it and earn it.
2. Triggers
“Triggers are stimuli that prompt people to think about related things.”
If I talk about whether or not a degree is important in one of my posts, people will likely associate that with their student loans.
3. Emotion
“When we care, we share.”
We are naturally emotional beings, and many people don’t have control over their emotions. When they see a post that enrages them, they tell the world about it.
I find this the funniest. Some people don’t like me, and they aren’t afraid to tell me.
However, when they give me a negative comment or quote my tweet with a negative phrase, they are engaging with my content, so they are actually helping my content grow impressions.
Sidenote: grow a thick skin.
The bigger you get, the more people will criticize you. Don’t respond to negative comments. In your head, thank them for the engagement and move on. If the comment is really negative, block the account.
4. Public
“Can people see when others are using our product or engaging in our desired behavior?”
People mimic others. About a year ago, I had a thread go viral. It accumulated over 70,000 likes, and I gained 11,000 new followers from one thread.
The funny thing is many of the comments were negative. The more people that chimed in, the more viral it got. When others saw others commenting, they all wanted to comment.
Another way to describe this is social proof. When others see others doing something, they want to do it too. This turns into a mass of people. People tend to choose to go with the masses.
5. Practical Value
“People like to help others, so if we can show them how our products or ideas will save time, improve health, or save money, they’ll spread the word.”
Think about the content you share with your friends. It’s probably funny or extreme or helpful. When you think about what you like to share, you’re putting yourself in your potential followers’ shoes.
Quick tips are fun and can generally save someone time or money when they are new or creative.
6. Stories
“People don’t just share information, they tell stories.”
People love stories. I bet you love stories and would be more likely to read a story than a list of actions.
I tell my story frequently, using “I” a lot. Many people see “I” and believe I’m self-centered or only think about me, however, when I use a different approach, like a how to do this without telling them my experience, I get very little engagement.
You’re going to find which content works and what doesn’t. You’ll also find the style that works best for you. For me, people seem to like my story instead of being told what to do.
It’s very similar in life. If a friend or family member lectures you about doing something differently, you’re going to tune out very fast. I know I do.
But, if they tell their story or their experience with something and show good results, you’re likely going to listen.
I picked up the book, Contagious, not realizing how applicable it would be to my content on X. It doesn’t matter what your product is. It could be a service, a tangible product, or even content. These principles are timeless and work.
You may have the most interesting thread ever, but if your hook isn’t great, then no one will read the thread.
Your hook is the first sentence of the thread. It determines how many impressions your tweets get.
If you don’t get your hook right, you won’t gain the engagement you need to grow and become eligible for the ad revenue sharing.
Spend the most time on your hook.
This is my process:
1. I get an idea for a thread.
If I’m not near my computer, I put in the Notes section of my phone. If I’m near my computer, I go to my scheduling tool and start typing.
If I only have the hook idea and not much time, then that’s all I put in there. Then I think about it as I’m doing other things, especially when running or working out.
2. Thoughts help significantly.
I seem to be very creative when walking or exercising. I try to organize the thread and run through the hook to see how to improve it.
3. Draft Two.
Next I try to fully write out the thread. This is an almost final draft. I schedule all tweets in my scheduler, Hypefury. This allows me to prep my posts for the entire week ahead of time.
Hypefury gives you the ability to post your same content to not only X, but also IG, Facebook, and Linkedin.

4. Review threads.
About three times a week, I go through my upcoming threads and double check them before they are posted.
I spend the most time on the hook. Think about the hook like you were scrolling through X. What type of content would catch your eye? Which type of content would make you stop and read it?
Putting yourself in your audience’s shoes is what helped me write more interesting hooks.
Hook tips:
- Figure out what your audience likes and give them more of it
- Say the same thing in 50 different ways
- People tend to like your story or experience versus getting lectured at (this is why I use “I” a lot in my hooks. Every time I address “you” in my hook, no one cares)
- People like easy and simple. Give them step by step actions.
- Be clear and concise.
- Make your words easy to read
- Find your story. Everyone has one.
- Give your audience value. My best threads are things that I’ve learnt and believe will help others.
- Use emotions. Emotions drives engagement. (fear of missing out, urgency, controversial topics)
X is a social media platform. You've got to be social on the platform to gain exposure.
These are all free ways to start building an audience:
1. Find 10 bigger accounts in your niche as well as 10 accounts in your niche around the same size and follow them.
Comment on these accounts every day. When you comment, add to the original tweet.
Give an extended idea that elicits more conversation. You can gain a lot of attention by writing great comments on accounts with much higher followers, especially when they’re in the same niche as you.
Comment a lot.
Aim to comment at least 30-50 times a day at the beginning to drive the attention.
When you’re a small account, it takes much more time to grow. That’s how it was for me and every single person that’s started anything.
Be the first to comment on these tweets. Set your notifications to be notified every time one of these accounts posts and then comment immediately. More people will see your responses and you’ll gain their attention. Put effort into a witty or intelligent response that helps others.
When my account was much smaller, I always noticed the more I commented, the more my followers grew that day. Comments are also a great way to build a relationship and ultimately a network.
For any account I looked up to and wanted to be like, I commented on their tweets daily. I caught their attention. In many cases I reached out to these accounts with questions and they answered my questions. I’m still in touch with many of these people today. This was the beginning of my X network.
2. Comment on other very large accounts every day.
Find accounts slightly outside of your niche. For example, I write about money and mindset, but I also comment on personal development accounts. There are some accounts with millions of followers. Being one of the first to comment on these accounts gives you great exposure.
The more exposure you get with different accounts, the more likely you will gain more followers.
X is a network. To grow, you must get exposure in different parts of the network. To gain exposure, you must interact with different accounts, which then gives you exposure in different webs of the network.
3. Retweet these accounts and other large accounts each day (at least 5 RT’s a day)
Another great resource is the retweet (now repost) and the quote options. Give your followers more interesting content by reposting others’ content. When you quote another’s post and add your feedback at the top, that’s a great way to gain attention from that account.
You are gaining attention from accounts you admire with potential networking opportunities, and you are providing your followers additional content they may not have seen.
This is an awesome strategy to do daily and doesn’t take much time or energy.
4. SO your friends
SO stands for Shout Out. It’s a tweet that lists a bunch of handles. This is an excellent way to gain exposure.
Once you’ve connected with a few people, see if they’re interested in a SO. For best results, reach out to slightly larger accounts and ask them if they’re good with being included. Some might repost it, giving it much more exposure.
There is a community of creators around the money niche, and one account did SO’s for months including many money-related accounts. His account grew tremendously over this period as well as mine since I was included in the SO’s.
SO’s are a great way to gain followers, but don’t only depend on them. In many cases, you may get new followers, but they may not stick around or engage with your content.
The best followers to gain are the ones who truly appreciate your content.
